COVID-19 Vaccine Update

To help you stay informed, keep reading for the latest information we have on the COVID-19 vaccine.

When will the vaccine be available?

Vaccines will be given in phases. According to Federal guidelines, the first phase (Phase 1A) prioritizes vulnerable populations. Those who are 65 years or older can begin receiving the vaccine on January 25. If you are 65 years or older, you should contact your doctor’s office or pharmacy for more information. Phase 1B is expected to include K-12 and higher education instructors and non-paramedic fire fighters.

The general public ages 16 and older will be in Phase 2, anticipated in late spring or summer of 2021. For more information, please visit the Wisconsin Department of Health Services at www.DHS.wisconsin.gov/covid-19/vaccine.

Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?
Safety has been a top priority for the COVID-19 vaccine. We have examined the FDA’s vaccine trials and as of now, none of the vaccine trials have reported any serious safety concerns. People cannot develop COVID-19 from these vaccines.

Where can I get the COVID-19 vaccine?
Pharmacies are the preferred choice to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, due to their numerous locations, convenient hours of operation and ease of use. When the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, you can visit vaccinefinder.org to see the number of vaccines available at nearby pharmacies. We also recommend checking the pharmacy’s website, as people will most likely be required to make an appointment for both the first and second shots. You can also receive a vaccination at a mass vaccination clinic run by local departments of health.

How much will the COVID-19 vaccine cost?
The COVID-19 vaccine is free and available at no cost to everyone. You will be able to receive the vaccine at any pharmacy or mass distribution site.

What can I do to stay healthy until I am eligible to receive a vaccine?
If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you should stay home. We encourage everyone to wash their hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, wear a mask when in public and stay at least six feet apart from others.

Please be aware of potential scams related to the COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage everyone to protect themselves and to not give out personal information to unknown sources.
